An essay is a group of paragraphs written about a single topic and a central idea. It must have a least three paragraphs, but a five paragraph essay is a common length for the academic writing.
There are many types of paragraphs:
Argumentative
Cause and effect
Compare and contrast
Descriptive
Narrative
The structure:
An essay will always be structure by at least three main parts that in fact, state, develop and summarize about a theme. These are:
The Introduction:
This is the first paragraph of an essay. It explains the topic with general ideas. It also contains important elements in its structure (hook and thesis statement). The hook is the first sentence of your introductory paragraph which intends to gather the reader´s attention by using a question, quote, joke, comment, fact, anecdote, among others. Besides it, the Thesis statement is the main idea of the essay. It usually comes at the end of the introductory paragraph.
2. The Body:
These are the paragraphs that explain, support or argue the thesis statement. In the academic writing, an essay can be composed by 3 accurate and interesting paragraphs which result in a five paragraph essay type. The body paragraph is composed at first by a topic sentence which is the first statement of each paragraph. Same which is drawn from the Thesis statement, and later supported by details and examples along the essay.
3. Conclusion:
This is the last paragraph of an essay. It summarizes, restates or paraphrases the Thesis statement and ideas developed in the essay. It usually starts with a signal word indicating that you are giving a closure to the composition. Bear in mind that in the conclusion you do not add additional information not mentioned before in the thesis statement or topic sentences.
